MAGAZINE ABOUT UKRAINE

PART OF COMPONENT ONE, PERSONAL INVESTIGATION

FINISHED PROJECT

BRIEF TO THE PROJECT

I've made a magazine about the Russian-Ukrainian war based on my own experiences and discussing my own views on the war. looking at artists like David Carson and his chaotic 'grungy’ style, Adbusters and their straight forwardness and openness, using bold images and drawn illustration elements in design.

DESCRIPTION TO THE PROJECT

I did a lot of preparation for the magazine, and a lot of sketches in order to present everything as discreetly as possible without harsh shots but to show the realities of the world. The magazine itself consists of 32 pages evenly divided in the middle where everything from the beginning to the middle is told about life before the war and after the middle about how it all began and continues to this moment. All the photos were taken by me and each one has its own meaning. On the cover you can see a girl with dried flowers who has folded her hands as if she is praying, and through which a red thread runs. This is a symbol of the connection between the living for whom they fought and between the dead who died for the living for the future generation. The title suggests that you and Ukraine are one and the same and what happens there will in any case be reflected in the world, no matter how much others may not want it, which is then mentioned on the last pages.

MAGAZINE COVER (1).jpg

At the beginning of the magazine, we are shown a young girl in traditional clothing, who is free and independent, who seems to soar in the sky like a bird (a symbol of freedom), runs through the fields and weaves flowers into her hair. But at one point, while holding a candle, everything went out, a siren sounded and the whole sky was covered in red from explosions that can be seen starting right in the middle of the magazine.

PAGES:

After that, you can start by saying that now this girl is tied up. Her eyes are covered because she can no longer see (they cover her eyes when people die), her mouth is covered so that she can no longer speak (that is propaganda in the aggressor country), she is forbidden to do anything. After that, photos appear from the protest in Manchester where all Ukrainians are fighting together on a mental level for their country. It also talks about the statistics of the dead and those who left their homes. And on one of the pages there are photos from Ukraine itself that I took on my trip home. There is a road sign that was blown up by a machine gun and in its background there is a picture of a house destroyed by an explosion. In place of the bullets, flowers are depicted, which is one with the symbol of those who died, and there are also words from the song in which they say "because you will draw flowers from the bullets on the wall" which is also a symbol of childhood trauma because of the war. and at the end it says what we cannot remain silent about and that without exaggerating the fact that not everyone can be on the battlefield, in order to defend our homeland, we can already help with our deeds and spreading the truth, in order to honour those who died for us.
